Pilates Teacher Level 3,  European Register of Exercise Professionals Level 4

Dscf0186-300I have now been doing Pilates for over 10 years. My body has changed. My posture has improved immeasurably, and I now have the flat stomach I have always sought. I am now in my fifties and I am getting stronger and more flexible each year. My Pilates journey is still unfinished as exercises which were beyond me a few years ago I now do with relative ease. I do not consider myself very flexible or very strong so this has been a surprising, but welcome discovery for me.

This is my Pilates story...

Before I started to do Pilates in 1999 I was a competitive runner and triathlete.  At the age of 27 after the birth of my son I started to run on the West Pennine moors where I lived just to keep fit. I discovered I had a talent for running and five years later in 1990 I won the English Fell Running Championship and represented England in Austria in the World Cup Mountain Races. I had the same success the following year and also represented England again in Switzerland. In 1998 at the age of 40 I was 10th in the world (40-44) at the World Triathlon Age Group Triathlon Championships in Switzerland, and won the British National Sprint title for the same age group. At my peak, I was only interested in my aerobic fitness and as my days were filled with swimming, cycling and running I had little time or inclination to worry about my core strength. In 1999, I visited my physiotherapist with a back problem. He suggested to me that I needed to strengthen the deep stabilising abdominal muscle to protect my back and advised me to do Pilates. The more I understood and practised Pilates the more I realised it was the best exercise I could do for my body.  I also found it a wonderful source of meditation and relaxation. In 2004, I started to work for my local council as a walk and cycle leader. Our remit was to improve the health and fitness of people over 50. I was passionate about the benefits of Pilates and persuaded my employers to let me train as a Teacher. I was able to set up classes in my locality. These classes were really successful and I found the whole experience very rewarding. I continued to develop as a Teacher and qualified at Level 3 in 2009.

Pilates in Perigord

I moved from the North West of England to the Dordogne in 2008, and in October 2010 'Pilates in Périgord' was born. I love to teach Pilates and find it so rewarding every time a client achieves something new or completes an exercise they have not been able to accomplish before. There is a level of Pilates to suit everyone regardless of age or ability, and I believe anyone can obtain the benefits that I have done.

" I'm definitely a Pilates convert and it has become an essential part of my life. Pilates is teaching me to re-educate the way I use my body, my posture has improved and I'm strengthening muscles I'd forgotten I had."

Rosa Batten, Montignac

" Cheryl is the best Pilates teacher I have ever had, she is patient and kind and explains the exercises in an easy to follow way. She is a true professional. I feel so lengthened after each class and I can’t wait for the next one!"
